That's interesting. I put the tmp directory onto a ramdisk as I thought that it might actually speed things up, and prolong the life of the SD card by not having images constantly written to it.

Perhaps I mucked up the settings somehow. Nice work finding it out.

Sorry .. yes that was a bit vague.. yes I removed the two statements from their files.

By RAM commands, do you mean that you moved the tmp directory off the ramdisk?

The camera is controlled using the subprocess module to run the raspistill program. You can alter the command line parameters sent to raspistill on line 74 of camera_streamer.py.

Hi Alan, i took out the ram commands , this increased the fps by 10000% but I would like to test higher fps's where in the code do a alter this please ?

I will build a 2nd img without the Arduino software. Following the full streamer installation. If that is still laggy then we know its not a problem with the Arduino interface.

Glad you've got the streaming working. I don't think that the lagginess is caused by the pi to arduino software, as the lagginess isn't there when the earlier raspbian image is used, and I'm sure that I tested just the streaming on its own at some point, and still saw the lag with the new Raspbian image. Having said that, if it is the pi to arduino software causing the lag, at least we have a definite target to fix.

Having the robot connect to a router would be a cool option, and should be fairly straight forward. It should just need a slightly modified /etc/network/interfaces. Ideally I'd like to offer some network configuration options via the web interface, but there are lots of things I could do with doing first, and never enough time.

I have managed to get the streaming working although its very laggy, I think this may have to do with the arduino to pi software as I dont have Dagu-pi installed yet . So once I have one plugged in I'll post the results.

Hi Alan,

thanks for the response, my main aim is to follow your build for the robot. But I would like to be able to access it through my home Wi-Fi as all that I have is a Wi-Fi enabled smart phone. So instead of being a Wi-Fi access point its actually another computer on my network. In this way I can xrdp onto it in real time and make adjustments, code change etc. Also being able to operate from a web browser at work would be awesome. I don’t know if you can set it as a Wi-Fi access point that connects to the home Wi-Fi with only one usb dongle. Although it may be possible if you don’t use the onboard DHCP and set a static one for the raspberry via the home router / Wi-Fi DHCP. That would overcome the web page login problem with random assigned IP address.

So I'm currently testing your pi image setup without making it an WAP or internal DHCP to see if I can achieve that.

I'll keep the thread updated.

Hi there,

It might be a problem with hostapd. Can you tell me if there's an IP address for wlan0 when you run ifconfig?

Our image is built from a Wheezy Raspbin base image, but it's quite old (June 2013 I think). This is because there seemed to be a bug with slow and jerky camera playback when using a newer image. So it may be that the older image lacks drivers for your WiFi dongle.

Hi I downloaded your Dawn-rasp image installed on a fresh disk.
I have the Edimax EW-7711UAN http://www.amazon.co.uk/Edimax-EW-7711UAN-150Mbps-Wireless-802-11n/dp/B001KOTDDU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1353413204&sr=8-1 and it works fine on a Weezy build but it does not seem to work on your img . It shows up in lsusb but i noticed on your build theres a fail with 802.11 message when starting up that I dont get with a normal image. Any ideas ?
