"programmer not responding" IDE message

I just bought the Pi Co=op board and I'm new to Arduino. I followed the Simple install to a new Raspian and brought up the Arduino IDE ok. When I upload the Blink basic sketch I get a "Programmer not responding".
Any ideas?
