Commons:Featured picture candidates
Featured picture candidates Featured picture candidates are images that the community will vote on, to determine whether or not they will be highlighted as some of the finest on Commons. This page lists the candidates to become featured pictures. The picture of the day images are selected from featured pictures. Old candidates for Featured pictures are listed here. There are also chronological lists of featured pictures: 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and current month. Formal things[edit]Nominating[edit]Guidelines for nominators[edit]Please read the complete guidelines before nominating. This is a summary of what to look for when submitting and reviewing FP candidates:
There are many different types of non-photographic media, including engravings, watercolours, paintings, etchings, and various others. Hence, it is difficult to set hard-and-fast guidelines. However, generally speaking, works can be divided into three types: Those that can be scanned, those that must be photographed, and those specifically created to illustrate a subject. Works that must be photographed include most paintings, sculptures, works too delicate or too unique to allow them to be put on a scanner, and so on. For these, the requirements for photography, below, may be mostly followed; however, it should be noted that photographs which cut off part of the original painting are generally not considered featurable. Works that may be scanned include most works created by processes that allow for mass distribution—for instance, illustrations published with novels. For these, it is generally accepted that a certain amount of extra manipulation is permissible to remove flaws inherent to one copy of the work, since the particular copy – of which hundreds, or even thousands of copies also exist – is not so important as the work itself. Works created to serve a purpose include diagrams, scientific illustrations, and demonstrations of contemporary artistic styles. For these, the main requirement is that they serve their purpose well. Provided the reproduction is of high quality, an artwork generally only needs one of the following four things to be featurable:
Digital restorations must also be well documented. An unedited version of the image should be uploaded locally, when possible, and cross-linked from the file hosting page. Edit notes should be specified in detail, such as "Rotated and cropped. Dirt, scratches, and stains removed. Histogram adjusted and colors balanced." Photographs On the technical side, we have focus, exposure, composition, movement control and depth of field.
On the graphic elements we have shape, volume, colour, texture, perspective, balance, proportion, noise, etc.
You will maximise the chances of your nominations succeeding if you read the complete guidelines before nominating. Video and audio
Set nominations If a group of images are thematically connected in a direct and obvious way, they can be nominated together as a set. A set should fall under one of the following types:
Adding a new nomination[edit]If you believe that you have found or created an image that could be considered valuable, with appropriate image description and licensing, then do the following. Step 1: copy the image name into this box, after the text already present in the box, for example, Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Your image filename.jpg. Then click on the "create new nomination" button. All single files:
Step 3: manually insert a link to the created page at the top of Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list: Click here, and add the following line to the TOP of the nominations list:
Recommended: Please add a category from the list at COM:FP. Optional: if you are not the creator of the image, please notify him/her using Voting[edit]Editors whose accounts have at least 10 days and 50 edits can vote. Everybody can vote for his/her own nominations. Anonymous (IP) votes are not allowed. You may use following templates:
You may indicate that the image has no chance of success with the template reason - ~~~~, where reason explains why the image is clearly unacceptable as a FP. The template can only be used when there are no support votes other than the one from the nominator. A well-written review helps participants (photographers, nominators and reviewers) improve their skills by providing insight into the strengths and weaknesses of a picture. Explain your reasoning, especially when opposing a candidate (which has been carefully selected by the author/nominator). English is the most widely understood language on Commons, but any language may be used in your review. A helpful review will often reference one or more of the criteria listed above. Unhelpful reasons for opposing include:
Remember also to put your signature (~~~~). Featured picture delisting candidates[edit]Over time, featured picture standards change. It may be decided that for some pictures which were formerly "good enough", this is no longer the case. This is for listing an image which you believe no longer deserves to be a featured picture. For these, vote:
This can also be used for cases in which a previous version of an image was promoted to FP, but a newer version of the image has been made and is believed to be superior to the old version, e.g. a newly edited version of a photo or a new scan of a historical image. In particular, it is not intended for replacing older photos of a particular subject with newer photos of the same subject, or in any other case where the current FP and the proposed replacement are essentially different images. For these nominations, vote:
If you believe that some picture no longer meets the criteria for FP, you can nominate it for delisting, copying the image name into this box, after the text already present in the box: In the new delisting nomination page just created you should include:
After that, you have to manually insert a link to the created page at the top of Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list. As a courtesy, leave an informative note on the talk page(s) of the original creator, uploader(s), and nominator with a link to the delisting candidate. can be used for this purpose. Featured picture candidate policy[edit]General rules[edit]
Featuring and delisting rules[edit]A candidate will become a featured picture in compliance with following conditions:
The delisting rules are the same as those for FPs, with voting taking place over the same time period. The rule of the 5th day is applied to delisting candidates that have received no votes to delist, other than that of the proposer, by day 5. There is also a limit of two active delisting nominations per user, which is in addition to the limit of two active regular nominations. The FPCBot handles the vote counting and closing in most cases, current exceptions are candidates containing multiple versions of the image as well as FPXed and withdrawn nominations. Any experienced user may close the requests not handled by the bot. For instructions on how to close nominations, see Commons:Featured picture candidates/What to do after voting is finished. Also note that there is a manual review stage between the bot has counted the votes and before they are finally closed by the bot, this manual review can be done by any user that is familiar with the voting rules. Above all, be polite[edit]Please don't forget that the image you are judging is somebody's work. Avoid using phrases like "it looks terrible" and "I hate it". If you must oppose, please do so with consideration. Also remember that your command of English might not be the same as someone else's. Choose your words with care. Happy judging… and remember... all rules can be broken. See also[edit]

Support This is a second attempt at nominating this photo. The previous attempt was made in 2009, before the Space Shuttle program ended. I believe that the photo now has historic value and it seems to be an exemplar of this type of photo (two shuttles on pads) on English Wikipedia, where it is already featured. There may be artistic complaints about the composition but I think that they are outweighed by the historic value. The sharpness is not great but due to the long distances and the atmospheric effects I think that this is acceptable, given the other good qualities of the photo. -- Pine✉ 06:54, 8 September 2018 (UTC)

Info Mount Stuart House on the east coast of the Isle of Bute, Scotland, is a Gothic Revival country house and the ancestral home of the Marquesses of Bute. It was designed by Sir Robert Rowand Anderson for the 3rd Marquess of Bute in the late 1870s. The two wings are older. The home has a fine marble hall, private chapel, first-floor conservatory and heated pool. During World War I it was used as a military hospital and the conservatory was an operating theatre. All by me. -- Colin (talk) 13:07, 7 September 2018 (UTC)

Weak oppose Great scene and I would love to call a shot like this my own but ... seems a little weirdly processed. The texture of the bark doesn't quite look natural, and the left edge of the church next to the sky seems to be a narrow pinkish blur. Was it downsized? Daniel Case (talk) 04:33, 8 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Daniel Case: I took a close look, and I don't see the problem with the left edge of the church, which makes me suspect that your display may be the problem. The bark is difficult for me to judge but I don't see something that looks so bad that it's clearly a problem in my opinion, so I will

- It was not shot in RAW, but in JPEG. -- Johann Jaritz (talk) 07:18, 8 September 2018 (UTC)
- Btw @Daniel Case:, the matter of fact, that the photo was shot on a chilly January winter morning and the position of the sun was way down low (so the sunlight had to penetrate the hazy atmosphere almost parallel to the surface of the earth), the whole scenery is plunged in the long-wave reddish light; that’s the reason why the bark of the tilia trees is not brownish but more on the reddish side. That circumstance can evoke an unnatural appearance. -- Johann Jaritz (talk) 07:34, 8 September 2018 (UTC)

Support - I'm moved by this. It's possible that as a New Yorker who knows that this firefighter probably died from breathing in the cancer-causing fumes, I'm biased, but it gets my vote. And it's certainly a striking composition. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 22:16, 6 September 2018 (UTC)

Support - I know photos of aurorae can be controversial at FPC, but the immensity of the aurora in the sky and its reflection in the water below are really special to me. I also think the quality and amount of noise are quite good, considering the situation. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:36, 6 September 2018 (UTC)

Oppose Please allow me to direct your collective attention to this image, of which this nomination is a slightly modified copy. Said image is already an FP and was a finalist in PotY 2017. As the images are almost identical, I humbly suggest that this nomination is withdrawn.--Peulle (talk) 09:07, 6 September 2018 (UTC)
Comment Just for the record: they are indeed very similar, but this is quite obviously not a copy derived from the same base image. Look at the land on the right, that's clearly two different pictures, either taken from different positions or with different water levels. --El Grafo (talk) 11:45, 6 September 2018 (UTC)
- Sure, but if this is promoted, it says that we can nominate several images that are very similar and expect them to be promoted. Instead of choosing the single best one out of a series, a photographer could shoot a whole series of images and nominate them all. It would undermine what FPC is all about; choosing the single best image between many candidates.--Peulle (talk) 14:57, 6 September 2018 (UTC)
- I think they're significantly different and that that's evident from comparing them by clicking back and forth between them. I'll wait a little longer, and if it becomes obvious that there's nevertheless a consensus for your view, I will withdraw, but I don't agree with you. Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:09, 6 September 2018 (UTC)
- That we disagree on an issue is of course fine; I stand by my point, though, and I feel that if yours prevailed, I should be able to nominate all four images in my M32 series since they're slightly different, and I just don't believe that is the intention behind FPC.--Peulle (talk) 21:34, 6 September 2018 (UTC)

Oppose My first reaction was "That's not a castle. That's a four bed house with pretensions". But then I realise you've photographed the side. It is photographed too close, which results in strange asymmetrical effects to the rounded parts and spire. 16mm on a full frame camera is ultra-wide and not really appealing for exterior architecture unless you are going for an effect. I appreciate it may not be possible to get much further back. At 7MP this appears to be 70% downsized from the 20MP camera. Please can you upload upload the original? -- Colin (talk) 21:49, 4 September 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you for you comment, Colin. I didn't downsize the image, the pixels were lost after I fixed the perspective and cropped the image. I couldn't get any further since from the western side there is a only a small driveway and then steep stairs down. Also, I think I left a bit more space on the sides than necessary because at that time I wasn't sure if I'd need that space during quite heavy perspective correction. Well, now I know than no, I wouldn't really need it :) I uploaded the original RAW here. Any advice how to improve my post processing is highly appreciated. Everyone with their back to us. There's a big hole in the middle of the composition, with orange at the outer sides. -- Colin (talk) 21:57, 4 September 2018 (UTC)
- Yes there is a "monk cut behind a small out-building", not really visible. Then, weeding the pavement to keep this place clean and attractive is less "awful" than honorable in my view, as these monks take care of their elegant temple. Old encode.
New encode.
Info There are some reasons to replace. (Original nomination)
- New encode is in VP9 which brings better quality to video. Above that, the bitrate is now closer to the original file, to avoid over-compression.
- New encode uses Opus as audio codec, which should improve compression and quality.
- The old encode has its color matrix incorrectly set, which result in the rendered colors being incorrect. This is fixed in the new file.
- You can see a simple comparison here.
Delist and replace -- FakeShemp (talk) 16:10, 3 September 2018 (UTC)
- I can't discern any material difference from the framecompare.com comparison link. If it's a better encode, feel free to just drop it over the existing file. I used whatever tool was available at the time. czar 10:38, 4 September 2018 (UTC)

- @Ikan Kekek: The criterion of good photo is not one, I think you have a fixed idea too much
--Laitche (talk) 08:25, 5 September 2018 (UTC)
- If you insist on my being more specific, the problem I have with this photo is that it's not that interesting for me to move my eyes around it, and then there isn't anything spectacular purely on the image level that would cause me to vote for a feature even though the form, in the terms in which I understand and experience form as something active involving my eyes moving around the picture frame, is not that interesting. If that's not specific enough for you, I could always choose to fall back on the very unspecific "no wow", which we are permitted to use as a reason for opposing. And if you find my taste uncongenial to you, just accept that it's different from yours, OK? -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:00, 5 September 2018 (UTC)

Comment User:Alvesgaspar nominated many this kind of photos though only few photos were featured. Yes, the light is not striking but I can also get sort of Zen and static feeling from this photo. In that mean, this one is special, IMHO. --Laitche (talk) 08:00, 5 September 2018 (UTC)

Distracting corner at the bottom left -- Basile Morin (talk) 02:33, 3 September 2018 (UTC)Weak oppose
Neutral after correction. Yes, this dark corner was very intrusive. So please, Poco, understand why I opposed here your picture, instead of contesting the issue you've just fixed. We certainly see things differently. You find this image awesome, while I just consider it very ordinary, with honesty and good faith. We have tons of similar pictures of religious buildings here (mainly christian, not much other religions represented) and this one is just one more. Due to the distorted perspective, this church looks giant inside, while the reality is probably very different. I personally prefer non-deformed perspective because it gives a better idea of how the interior is in truth. The color is yellowish, so not very aesthetic. In these conditions, an intrusive object spoiling the left corner to completely break the symmetry was just too much. This is only my subjective opinion, and your photo also gets 5 supports. Now I'm neutral because the correction was made successfully -- Basile Morin (talk) 00:33, 4 September 2018 (UTC)

- Not sure why you included a daytime shot of a bird among the unsuccessful night nominations or why you chose blood moon photos as they can hardly be photographed in bright light. Brightened. --Laitche (talk) 09:19, 1 September 2018 (UTC)
Neutral Still darker than I'd prefer, but one thing I didn't notice the first time around is that the detail is a bit lacking. Great scene with great lighting though so I won't oppose. -- King of ♥ ♦ ♣ ♠ 20:23, 1 September 2018 (UTC)
- @King of Hearts: I think this lens is not so sharp, I also had Canon EF16-35mm f/4L IS USM in that time but I couldn't use that. Just I didn't have a time to change lens since this scene has disappeared in an instant. --Laitche (talk) 01:46, 2 September 2018 (UTC)

Weak support beautiful composition and colors, although the detail in the trees at the upper right seems less than ideal. --Pine✉ 07:09, 8 September 2018 (UTC)

Oppose The image consists of lots of cut structures and elements surrounding an empty dark space, sorry, that composition is not working for me. --Cart (talk) 13:02, 30 August 2018 (UTC)
Support I Like.....it seems confused, like a big city --Σπάρτακος (talk) 17:24, 30 August 2018 (UTC)
Oppose per Cart. I can attest from personal experience before Wikimania 2014 that there are ample featured media opportunities on the DLR; however, this is not one of them. Daniel Case (talk) 19:28, 30 August 2018 (UTC)
Neutral I like it, but not enough to vote for it, my apologies. The atmosphere reminds me of Ghost in the Shell movies... --GeXeS (talk) 05:57, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

Oppose Dark, chaotic, and nothing spectacular there -- Basile Morin (talk) 03:03, 1 September 2018 (UTC)
Comment - Not chaotic, IMO, but exciting. I will support if the horizontal striations in the sky are cleaned up or a natural explanation can be given for them. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:34, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

Closing a featured picture promotion request[edit]
The bot[edit]
Note that the description below is for manual closure, this is mostly not needed anymore as there exists a bot (FPCBot) that counts the votes and handles the process below (except to add categories on the file page). However after the bot has counted the votes a manual review step is used to make sure the count is correct before the bot again picks up the work.
Manual procedure[edit]
Any experienced user may close requests.
- In Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list click on the title/link of the candidate image, then [edit].
Add the result of the voting at the bottom (on a new line with a space first)
(for example see Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:The Bridge (August 2013).jpg). See also FPC-results-reviewed.
- Also edit the title of the candidate image template and add after the image tag
featured or not featured
For example:
:File:XXXXX.jpg
becomes
=== :File:XXXXX.jpg, featured === - Save your edit.
- If it is featured:
- Add the picture to the list of the four most recently featured pictures of an appropriate category of Commons:Featured pictures, list as the first one and delete the last one, so that the number is four again.
- Also add the picture to an appropriate subpage of Commons:Featured pictures, list. Click on the most appropriate link beneath where you just added it as one of the four images.
- Add the template to the image description page.
- If it was an alternative image, use the subpage/com-nom parameter: For example, if File:Foo.jpg was promoted at Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Bar.jpg, use
- If the image is already featured on another wikipedia, just add featured=1 to the Assessments template. For instance becomes
- Add the picture to the chronological list of featured pictures. Put it in the gallery using this format: File:xxxxx.jpg|# - Headline<br>created by xxxxx, uploaded by xxxxx, nominated by xxxxx
- The # should be replaced by 1 for the first image nominated that month, and counts up after that. Have a look at the other noms on that page for examples.
- You may simplify this if multiple things were done by the same user. E.g.: File:xxxxx.jpg|# - Headline<br>created, uploaded, and nominated by xxxxx
- Add == FP promotion ==
File:XXXXX.jpg to the Talk Page of the nominator. - Add on the file page its respective categories for Featured pictures of... like Category:Featured pictures of objects, Category:Featured pictures of landscapes, of people, of Germany, of Paris, etc. This is the only part of the process that needs a human user to complete it.
- As the last step (whether the image is featured or not; including FPXed, FPDed and withdrawn nominations), open Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list, click on [edit], and find the transclusion of the nomination you've just finished closing. It will be of the form:

Copy it to the bottom of Commons:Featured picture candidates/Log/September 2018), save that page, and remove it from the candidate list.
Closing a delisting request[edit]
- In Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list click on the title/link of the candidate image, then [edit].
Add the result of the voting at the bottom (on a new line with a space first)
Result: x delist, x keep, x neutral => /not/ delisted. ~~~~
(for example see Commons:Featured picture candidates/removal/Image:Astrolabe-Persian-18C.jpg) - Also edit the title of the delisting candidate image template and add after the image tag
delisted or not delisted
For example:
=== :File:XXXXX.jpg === becomes === :File:XXXXX.jpg, delisted === - Move the actual template from Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list to the bottom of the actual month page on Commons:Featured picture candidates/Log/September 2018.
- If the outcome was not delisted, stop here. If it is delisted:
- Remove the picture from Commons:Featured pictures, list and any subpages.
- Replace the template Featured picture on the image description page by Delisted picture. If using the Assessments template, change featured=1 to featured=2 (do not change anything related to its status in other featured picture processes). Also, remove the image from all categories like Featured pictures of ....
- Add a delisting-comment to the original entry in chronological list of featured pictures in bold-face, e. g. delisted 2007-07-19 (1-6) with (1-6) meaning 1 keep and 6 delist votes (change as appropriate). The picture in the gallery is not removed.
- If this is a Delist and Replace, the delisting and promotion must both be done manually. To do the promotion, follow the steps in the above section. Note that the assessment tag on the file page and the promotion tag on the nominator's talk page won't pick up the /replace subpage that these nominations use.
Archiving a withdrawn nomination[edit]
- In Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list click on the title/link of the candidate image, then [edit].
In the purpose that the FPCbot will not mark withdrawn nominations with a "to be reviewed" template and put them in Category:Featured picture candidates awaiting closure review just like if they were on the usual list, put the following "no" template:
- Also edit the title of the candidate image template and add after the image tag
not featured
For example:
:File:XXXXX.jpg
becomes
=== :File:XXXXX.jpg, not featured === - Save your edit.
- Open Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list, click on [edit], and find the transclusion of the nomination. It will be of the form:

Copy it to the bottom of Commons:Featured picture candidates/Log/September 2018), save that page, and remove it from the candidate list.
