Description
English: The Bulgarian National Archaeological Museum (Национален археологически музей or Nacionalen arheologičeski muzej) is located in the centre of Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. It occupies the building of an Ottoman mosque, the Byuyuk Mosque, where it has been housed for over a 100 years. The museum has five exhibition halls: Central Hall, Prehistory, Middle Ages, Treasures (or vault), and one dedicated to temporary exhibitions.
In the 'Vault', you can see treasures from six warrior graves from the Trebenishte necropolis and the treasure of Valcitran (tableware in solid gold, more than 3000 years old). Most famous is the Thracian golden death mask and grave goods, unearthed in 2004, at the Svetitsa tumulus and a life-size bronze portrait, possibly belonging to Seuthes III.
