Summary[edit]

Description

Seattle trolleybus 1005, built in 1944 by Pullman-Standard, was retired from service in January 1978 (carrying fleet number 655), but in the mid-1980s it was restored by volunteers from the Metro Employees Historic Vehicle Association, for operation on public and private excursions. The paint scheme it has worn since then was the Seattle Transit System's standard paint scheme in the late 1940s and early 1950s. This photo shows No. 1005 turning from University Way onto NE 50th Street in the University District, using overhead trolley wires installed just a few years earlier, for route 70, which was converted to trolleybuses in 1997. It is displaying historically correct signage for southbound trips on trolleybus route 7, which passed through this same intersection until being converted to diesel buses in 1963. Route 7 was reconverted to trolleybuses in 1981 (but not extending this far north). In this 2000 photo, No. 1005 was operating on a special excursion in commemoration of the 60th anniversary (two days prior) of the opening of the Seattle trolleybus system.
