  • Could you demonstrate some of your renaming requests. --sasha (krassotkin) 11:54, 21 August 2018 (UTC)

In chronological order:

File:Abandoned backhoe loader manufactured by H. Weyhausen KG (As, Belgium, DSCF3141-hdr).jpg, File:Abandoned fireless steam locomotive attached to the SNCB B22490 type-K3 carriage in As, Belgium (V03.0006 3541 16 DSCF3135-hdr).jpg, File:Abandoned SNCB B22490 type-K3 carriage in As, Belgium (DSCF3127-hdr).jpg, File:View inside the abandoned SNCB B22490 type-K3 carriage from B22495 in As, Belgium (DSCF3124-hdr).jpg, File:View of an abandoned train track from the back of the SNCB B22495 type-K3 carriage in As, Belgium (DSCF3106-hdr).jpg, File:View of an abandoned train track from the back of the SNCB B22495 type-K3 carriage in As, Belgium (DSCF3109-hdr).jpg (spelling mistake)

File:Street art in the tunnel at Rue des Tanneurs under the railway (Brussels, Belgium).jpg (wrong street name)

Category:Cairina moschata domestica and Category:Quality images of cairina moschata

File:Bonne Chiere windmill in Bruges, Belgium (DSCF4838).jpg (wrong windmill)

File:Marolles from Place Poelaert, Brussels (DSCF6759).jpg, File:L'Homme de l'Atlantide by Luk Van Soom (DSCF6790).jpg (more relevant name)

File:Grand Place Flower Carpet 2018 (30mm).jpg (more useful)

File:Tournai, BE (DSCF5135) Château de Jules César in Vaulx.jpg (more accurate)

The only move I requested that wasn't on my own file is on Category:Muscovy ducks, the scientific name "Cairina moschata" is used for the species and the common name for domestic specimen, I requested it be renamed "Cairina moschata domestica" because "Muscovy ducks" was generating a lot of confusion and miscategorisation, and "Cairina moschata domestica" is the name in use on Wikipedia. The category name was moved, then User:MPF reverted the change. I asked about it on Category talk:Muscovy ducks and never heard back. I have no desire to make controversial changes or to change someone else's files against their will, as my request history has shown I would like to improve my files without making it a burden on other. --Trougnouf (talk) 09:46, 22 August 2018 (UTC)

@Trougnouf: Sorry, missed the Category talk (the notification system failed to notify me!). The reason I reverted it is that "Cairina moschata domestica" is not a valid name under the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature rules; domesticated breeds are not zoological taxa, so they do not have scientific names. - MPF (talk) 10:14, 22 August 2018 (UTC)
@MPF: Thank you for getting back to me :) Do you think it would make more sense to add "(domestic)" to the category name (in plain English like on Wikipedia)? I saw that you do some cleaning up between the miscategorized images, but it's impossible to get them all. Most of the images in Category:Muscovy ducks look like they are not domesticated but roaming freely in parcs and ponds, yet we can never tell for sure unless the author mentioned it in the description. I don't know if that's an issue specific to Muscovy ducks or a general rule for species (to categorize domestic animals as their common species name without a domestic qualifier) and you are surely more familiar with the best practices as you administrate Wikispecies. --Trougnouf (talk) 12:06, 22 August 2018 (UTC)
@Trougnouf: Thanks! Yep, I guess 'Category:Domesticated muscovy ducks' would be more correct, it's just that it is rather long and tedious: you have to type manually as far as 'domestica...' before the drop-down box for adding/changing a category offers 'Domesticated', got to go through 'Dome', then 'Domes', then 'Domestic', before getting to 'Domesticated'. This is already a nuisance with categories like 'Domesticated ducks', 'Domesticated geese', etc. A better option would be Category:Muscovy ducks (domesticated); I'd be happy with that. - MPF (talk) 12:59, 22 August 2018 (UTC)
@MPF: That's what I had in mind, (domesticated) at the end, that way it autocompletes when a user starts categorizing their image "Muscovy ducks" and it shows them that the category is for the domestic kind (then the user not familiar with the commons use of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature will hopefully investigate and find the parent Category:Cairina moschata). Thank you! I will make a move request move moved it to Category:Muscovy ducks (domesticated) then. --Trougnouf (talk) 13:14, 22 August 2018 (UTC)

Pictogram-voting-question.svg Question @EVandRailway: can you please (reverse) translate to English what is currently inscribed in Commons:File renaming/ja #FR2 and FR3? You likely misunderstand what does the true Criterion 3 mean. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 16:12, 22 August 2018 (UTC)

(simply) FR2…Ambiguous meaning, FR3…Incorrect name
ex) FR2 JAPAN.png→Flag of Japan.png, FR3 Flag of Japon.png→Flag of Japan.png--EVandRailway (talk) 23:16, 22 August 2018 (UTC)
@EVandRailway: which name would be good for what is now file:Japon Akihabara1.jpg? Which criterion to use for renaming? Incnis Mrsi (talk) 10:05, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
english"Japan"=french"Japon" (Criteria to decline#2)--EVandRailway (talk) 11:05, 23 August 2018 (UTC)

Gazoth[edit]

I operate a batch upload bot that chooses the file names from image caption. The logic that chooses the file name is not perfect and it sometimes results in substandard file names. I have so far attempted to correct these by placing move requests, but recently I discovered about 500 files requiring renaming. This might result in unnecessary burden on file movers, which can be avoided if I have file mover rights. I am familiar with renaming guidelines and have requested renaming of almost 100 files. Thank you. —Gazoth (talk) 17:21, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

Pbdragonwang[edit]

I hope to become a filemover. Because there are a lots of photos, like File:新竹市文化古蹟 0155.jpgFile:新竹市文化古蹟0048.jpgFile:新竹市文化古蹟0060.jpg (their names are "cultural heritage monument no. xx" in English), named in Chinese should be renamed (only broad location or inappropriate for specific content). And it seems to me that we need more filemovers who understand Chinese to help us deal with those photo incorrectly named in Chinese. 祥龍 (talk) 14:22, 2 September 2018 (UTC)

Pictogram voting comment.svg Comment Of course you can become filemover. Just a question: A file from the above link is called File:敘利亞騎士堡8694.jpg. How do you want to rename it? Maybe in file «敘利亞騎士堡8694 - Appearance of the Syrian Knights Castle - シリア騎士城の外観 - सीरियाई नाइट्स कैसल की उपस्थिति»? Files with Chinese filenames can be used in wiki projects. Much more helpful is the file description in several languages. Also the image search on commons follows the description. The file name is secondary. Hystrix (talk) 17:38, 2 September 2018 (UTC)
The link was just an example, not all photos uploaded by User:林高志 in the link should be renamed. File:敘利亞騎士堡8694.jpg is not one of those photos I want to rename. Photos like File:新竹市文化古蹟 0155.jpgFile:新竹市文化古蹟0048.jpgFile:新竹市文化古蹟0060.jpg (Chinese chacters in their names mean "cultural heritage monument in Hsinchu City" in English) uploaded by User:林高志 are those ones need to be renamed. The former example seems not good, so I deleted the link in the reason and put some photos need to be renamed.--祥龍 (talk) 22:41, 2 September 2018 (UTC)

Niridya[edit]

There are lots of requests it I will enjoy checking them out and helping other contributors. For example of my work, I asked rename (and almost all of them are already done) of 10~15 files in the category Category:USB pinouts. Thank you. Niridya (talk) 19:59, 2 September 2018 (UTC)
