Dear Adam Cuerden,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.

Coates Restoration[edit]
Thanks again for your restoration of Mrs. Coates' image and FP nomination. Far from perfect or complete, I tried my hand at restoring an image of Mrs. Coates' mother some years ago, and other damaged images of members of her family. Wikimedia Commons and the University of Edinburgh[edit]
Hi Adam, just to say hello following our meeting up at Wikimania the other week. Really enjoyed your talk. I also would like to run something by you. We have this project called the Edinburgh Digital Ambassador which has a page here. It's a pilot scheme to get students to engage in & evidence 50 hours of learning digital skills after which they get an award. Wikimedia is one of the options they have along with lynda.com and Media Hopper. W:User:Anniesnow is one such student and she has said she's be interested in doing some work on Wikicommons. Suggested maybe taking pics of buildings in Edinburgh that aren't represented on Wikipedia but I think you will probably have a lot more suggestions of ways in which she could add to & improve the content of Wikicommons. Any thoughts of how we can put her to good work then let me know. PLUS I'm meeting the University library team next Friday 15th at 3.30pm at 15 George Square if you'd be free to attend the meeting to discuss releasing some of their content on Wikicommons. Apparently they have around 7000 images they are considering releasing so I'd appreciate your input on the best way to do it (getting the right metadata, wikidata added at the get go etc.) If you're free to join us then great if not then any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated. Can even send you the list of items they have in their collections if you would like a nosey (they have created a directory of all their collections now for the first time). Generosity Crowdfunding Campaign for User:The Photographer[edit]
Please excuse me spamming you. As a regular on Feature Picture Candidatess you will recognise User:The Photographer, who has 86 Featured Pictures. His contributions cover the architecture and culture of Brazil and Venezuela. He has basic photographic equipment: an old D300 camera and 35mm lens, and lives in a poor country where photographic equipment is expensive. The Photographer has recently taken several images using the technique where multiple frames are stitched together to create a high-resolution panorama. However, many times frustrated with the stitching errors that result from trying to take such photos without a proper panoramic head for his tripod. This special equipment permits the camera to be rotated around the entrance pupil of the lens, and eliminates such errors. Having a panoramic head would greatly increase the potential for The Photographer to create sharp high-resolution images for Commons. In addition, the purchase of a fisheye lens would enable 180 × 360° panoramas to be taken, which are a great way to explore a scene as though one is really there.
