Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2015 is open![edit]
You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2015 Picture of the Year contest.
Dear Finnusertop,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.
Thanks,
-- Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 09:43, 22 May 2016 (UTC)
Logo of Voice of Korea[edit]
Hello!
To be honest, I don't really get the rules here. Using a copyrighted image is fine but uploading an SVG rework of it (which I spent two hours creating) is prohibited just because it's derivative. Are my other works okay, anyway? Oppashi (talk) 21:02, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
- @Oppashi: Using a copyrighted image is sometimes fine, on some Wikimedia projects such as the English Wikipedia. You can see details here: en:Wikipedia:Non-free content. Uploading non-free images on Wikimedia Commons, however, is never allowed (note how Vok-logo.png has been uploaded to Wikipedia only and not Commons). As for your other images, the answer is "maybe". If the same conditions apply (you think that the original image is copyrighted, and your version of follows the original closely and is a derivative work), then yes. I'd rather not comment on individual cases because North Korean copyrights are a very murky issue (their copyright law is only a few pages long, its definitions are vague, and we don't have access to details about who exactly created and originally published these works and when). If you feel confused by the rules (as we all do; it's impossible to master all copyright laws of all countries and their interactions), then keep studying them, look for precedents, and only work with what you consider clear and safe cases. Derivative works are one of the trickiest aspects of copyright and it's better to stick to well-known applications of law (such as Freedom of panorama photographs of buildings, whose design is copyrighted, allowed in the copyright law of some countries). - According to the third condition of the guideline Commons:Own work (Using graphics software to create a digital illustration (map, diagram, etc) from scratch) my work should be allowed because it was made from scratch, as I stated on the File talk. Oppashi (talk) 21:22, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
- @Oppashi: But it is not made form scratch. You said it is based on the copyrighted design. Whether you trace it by pencil or software, the medium is irrelevant. Insofar as your version contains the same elements that made the original a copyrightable work in the first place, it is a derivative work of it. Finnusertop (talk) 21:33, 18 October 2016 (UTC)

- I am very disappointed because of my work was deleted with my message left on the talk page ignored. Actually the Copyright Law of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea permits using my work even without their permission. You said you're confused by it but this is as simple as telling apart white and black:
“Article 32 (Use of copyrighted work without permission)
A copyrighted work may be used without the permission of the copyright holder in the following cases:
(...)
2. when a copyrighted work is reproduced for the purposes of preserving, displaying, reading or lending in such places as a library, an archives, a museum or a memorial hall;
5. when a copyrighted work is broadcast or carried in newspapers or periodicals for the purpose of its introduction;
(...)
7. when a copyrighted work is performed free of charge;”
Oppashi (talk) 23:12, 18 October 2016 (UTC)- Wikimedia Commons is none of those places or types of publication, Oppashi, and publishing is not the same as performing. The file was deleted and if you want to challenge that, you need to talk to the deleting admin instead of me. Finnusertop (talk) 23:26, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
- Kind of you. Oppashi (talk) 23:47, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
Tagging copyvios[edit]
Hi, When tagging copyright violations, please inform the uploader. This is best done using the gagdet. See in your preferences to enable them, tab "Gadget", section "Maintenance tools" : "AjaxQuickDelete" and "Quick delete". These add links in the left column (or right column for Hebrew, Arabic, etc., language interface). Regards, Yann (talk) 18:08, 5 January 2017 (UTC)
