While there are many outstanding texts in the field of antenna theory, this book is the first to present a thorough and comprehensive foundation in the important area of polarization theory. Antennas for Radar and Communications is designed as a text and reference for professionals, students at the graduate level, and even seniors with sufficient background in electromagnetics. Thoughtfully organized, detailed chapters lead the reader into concepts and applications of polarimetrically-correct antenna theory by building from basic antenna theory with interesting, useful examples and a large selection of problems. Beginning with chapters on transmission between antennas, arrays and adaptive arrays, broadband antennas, and other non-polarimetric concepts, Dr. Mott then introduces descriptions of elliptically-polarized waves and antennas. The text develops procedures for treating polarization of waves and antennas, using polarization ratios with rectangular, circular, and general polarization bases, geometric descriptions of waves, and the Poincar?sphere. This provides the essential basis for such topics as:
polarization efficiency of antenna pairs
polarization adaptivity
loss of power between non-aligned antennas
optimal polarization for monostatic radar
polarimetric scattering from targets
partial polarization
target discrimination using polarization properties
and many more
Information on many aspects of polarization theory has previously been difficult to find, and sometimes almost as difficult to assimilate. Dr. Mott’s clear treatment of the subject will be a welcome change for practicing engineers and students of antenna theory.
