I’ve just submitted an updated version of Sphero Companion to Google Play. It is still completely free for all Sphero fans to play with.

I’ve added a bunch of new commands, and also refined the existing ones. I’ve also documented all the commands that the app currently supports. You can see all the commands here:

The next update will be a voice programming function. I want to add the ability for users to teach Sphero a sequence of moves using voice commands, then save that sequence with a user specified name. Users can then recall that sequence by name at a later time. It’ll be remembered between play sessions.

I have always had a love of robotic toys! I buy almost every robot toy that comes out. For some strange reason, I missed getting Sphero until about a month ago. However, since I got Sphero 2.0, I’ve been in love with the little guy, so I decided to make an app that would turn him into my talking robot buddy!

I had so much fun with Sphero 2.0 that I have since also gotten Ollie and the Sphero SPRK edition. (Yes, I’m a bit obsessed.)

He is fun to drive around (I like to drift between the legs of my coffee table). He is water proof. He is full of amazing tech. And he’s a ball!! He’s a ball that moves around on his own!

Of all my robots, I think my 4 year old niece has played with Sphero the most. That gets a big positive vote from me.

One of the cool things about Sphero is that he has lots of great apps – from AR games to educational apps that teach kids to program.

One of the COOLER things about Sphero is that the makers of Sphero provide SDKs to enable us to make our own Sphero apps.

I wanted to take the things that I learnt from making MobBob to creating a fun, interactive Sphero app – one where Sphero is your robotic companion!

I wanted to use speech recognition as the primary way of interacting with Sphero. And I wanted Sphero to talk back to me. Since Sphero doesn’t have a speaker built in, the phone has to do the talking, but I wrote some code so that Sphero would pulse his lights when he was speaking so that you know he is the one who is talking.

This video is a demonstration of where I am so far.

I’m really happy with how it’s taking shape! I’m going to add more functionality this weekend and then release it for other Sphero owners to play with.
