What to do when file is not uploaded & error message says "badparams"[edit]

Can anyone help on this issue. What should I do to pdf if "badparams" message comes up. --Pavan santhosh.s (talk) 14:17, 10 August 2016 (UTC)

@Pavan santhosh.s: What is the exact, complete error message you're seeing? Also, which upload tool are you using? Matma Rex (talk) 17:36, 10 August 2016 (UTC)
Screen shot of commons
@Matma Rex: I am giving screen shot of it. Please let me know if it can be solved. --Pavan santhosh.s (talk) 08:46, 14 August 2016 (UTC)
@Pavan santhosh.s: Thanks, that's very helpful. It appears to be a bug in UploadWizard… I filed phab:T143134 about this issue and I'll look into it. Matma Rex (talk) 18:02, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
@Pavan santhosh.s: I see you managed to upload a file with this name: File:Chellapilla Venkata Sastry 2016-08-13.pdf. Just to confirm, this is the same file that failed before, right? I was going to ask you to email it to me, sometimes such problems are specific to some files. Matma Rex (talk) 18:52, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
I tracked down the problem and resolved it. You should no longer get this error message when uploading anything after the regularly scheduled deployment on Wednesday next week. Matma Rex (talk) 16:52, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
  • Thank you @Matma Rex:. Yes, I could manage to upload. But my way to do this is some how tricky. I uploaded it to drive and then downloaded it from another computer. And that file I could upload it easily. I don't know how I could do it but been possible. :) --Pavan santhosh.s (talk) 07:30, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

upload from email roster[edit]

How can I upload an article I have on yahoo email? AN — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cozy20016 (talk • contribs) 15:37, 10 August 2016 (UTC)

You wouldn't normally upload an article. The usual way would be to write an article on Wikipedia and illustrate it with images uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. See en:Wikipedia:Your first article for the first part and Commons:First steps for the second. --rimshottalk 09:15, 11 August 2016 (UTC)

That's how weird that I cannot use my own photo which I'm owning it's copyright and determined that I violated my copyright[edit]

This is Morganalok !!! The copyright owner of the uploaded photo. Please noticed that I'm the copyright owner and I own it's copyright ! This photo is one of my official profile photo using for my actress career for all media and everywhere !!!. Of coz you can found in different websites by my authorization. That's how weird that I cannot use my own photo which I'm owning it's copyright and determined that I violated my copyright as I'm the copyright owner !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyone can explain why??????????????????? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Morganalok (talk • contribs) 02:07, 12 August 2016 (UTC)

@Morganalok:
  1. You must understand COM:LICENSING.
  2. You must prove that you are who you claim to be by following COM:OTRS.
Regards, --Lacrymocéphale (talk) 06:34, 12 August 2016 (UTC)
@Morganalok: Wiki accounts are anonymous, inherently. We do not know that you are the copyright holder, we know that you are some person claiming to be the copyright holder. If a work you own, and uploaded, was deleted for copyright concerns you need to send a verification of permissions per COM:OTRS, and they will request undeletion when it's processed. Reventtalk 06:36, 12 August 2016 (UTC)
Also, you are typically not the copyright holder of photographs that you merely appear in. The copyright holder is normally the photographer, unless the photographer is an employee of yours, or there is a written contract or copyright transfer agreement. LX (talk, contribs) 11:42, 12 August 2016 (UTC)
@Lacrymocéphale: and @LX:
Thank you so much for your reply. I understand now and I'm now drafting an email to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. Thanks again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Morganalok (talk • contribs) 15:37, 12 August 2016 (UTC)

you automatic filter is stopping me uploading a photograph, which has nothing wrong about it[edit]

I get a message - We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikimedia Commons. Please only upload photos that you took yourself with your camera, or see what else is acceptable. See the guide to make sure the file is acceptable and learn how to upload it on Wikimedia Commons. how do I get past this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Heraldic44 (talk • contribs) 08:19, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

If it's indeed your own photograph, is there a reason you can only provide a 721×820 version and not a full resolution version? LX (talk, contribs) 09:05, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

Request transfer of images from Flickr[edit]

I feel a bit of an idiot not knowing how to go about transferring an image from Flickr, but I'd like to request transfer of the following files:

I'm looking to refresh the images on en:Statue of Liberty but I'm not happy with the current choice in Category:Statue of Liberty. Thanks! AnotherNewAccount (talk) 22:15, 14 August 2016 (UTC)

Thanks ever so! AnotherNewAccount (talk) 23:05, 14 August 2016 (UTC)

Upload tutorial[edit]

I would like to have some fellow veterans upload photos they created. Is there a simple tutorial I can direct them to? --21lima (talk) 01:41, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

File from Flickr[edit]

Hello, an Italian commoner on our village pump asked why this photograph can't be uploaded in spite of being properly licenced (by Financial Times, thus not a case of flickr laundry). In fact I too attempted to upload it just to perform a test and the Wizard told me that such a file had previously been uploaded on this Wiki but it was not showed me where's the duplicate one. It happens with that file only. Anyone has experienced anything similar? Thanks .-- SERGIO (aka the Blackcat) 22:06, 16 August 2016 (UTC)

@Blackcat: Can you take a screenshot of the error message you're seeing and upload it somewhere? I get an error message that points me to File:Boris_Johnson_Leo_Johnson.jpg when I try uploading that file using UploadWizard: https://i.imgur.com/YmdSnQI.png Matma Rex (talk) 00:41, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
Yes, File:Boris Johnson Leo Johnson.jpg is an exact duplicate (not just the 'same image', but the identical file). If the Italian version of the Upload Wizard doesn't show that, it should probably be fixed to do so. Reventtalk 05:57, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
Works for me with &uselang=it too. Matma Rex (talk) 09:00, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
Ok, problem solved then. I errounesly assumed that anything about Boris Johnson had to be sought in the category:Boris Johnson but apparently the picture hadn't been categorized since its upload thus I couldn't know whether an exact duplicate existed already. Having found the duplicate is clear why I got the error message. That said, as pointed above, the lack of existing filename in the Italian interface of UploadWizard is a fix that should be fixed. Thanks to Matma Rex for taking time to check the problem. -- SERGIO (aka the Blackcat) 12:40, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
@Blackcat: Could you upload a screenshot of the error message you're seeing, that doesn't mention the existing file name? As far as I can tell, it works correctly, also in Italian. Perhaps you're talking about a different tool than Special:UploadWizard? Matma Rex (talk) 16:56, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
Yes, of course, Matma Rex, here you are! -- SERGIO (aka the Blackcat) 12:03, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
@Blackcat: Aha, I see it now. Since you were talking about Flickr, I assumed you're using the "Share images from Flickr" function of UploadWizard (see Commons:Upload Wizard/Flickr, currently only available for admins and license reviewers). But it looks like you're just downloading the image from Flickr to your computer, then uploading it normally.
You were probably running into phab:T130564, which causes UploadWizard not to receive any warnings about the uploaded file if it was bigger than 5 MB (and this file is 6.98 MB), including the warning that the file is a duplicate of an existing one. We'd only get the warnings when you tried to publish the file (note how the error in my screenshot is displayed on the "Upload" step, while the one in yours is on the "Describe" step), and it looks like the error handling there is incomplete (since I guess it's not supposed to happen).
I incidentally fixed that just two days ago and the fix should be deployed to Wikimedia wikis next week (on Wednesday to Commons). It should resolve this problem too. Matma Rex (talk) 20:15, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
Ok, thanks for the collaboration. ad maiora -- SERGIO (aka the Blackcat) 21:26, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

Cannot upload my own picture[edit]

Dear all, I have tried to upload a picture on: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_invasiver_gebietsfremder_Arten_von_unionsweiter_Bedeutung?veaction=edit

However, I got error messages again and again. One was called Wiki Media Cross error, I believe. I then tried again and the message was again that an error occured and that there is something wrong with the file. Any ideas? JK Zoo (talk) 10:10, 17 August 2016 (UTC)

Hi JK Zoo! I see from Special:AbuseLog/1398939 that you encountered an upload filter that prevents low-resolution uploads from newly registered users using the particular upload process that you used. The reason for this filter is that such uploads overwhelmingly turn out to be copyright violations. An 816×459 pixel image is quite small (73×41 mm on my 15" display) and more typical of a file downloaded from the Internet than what a camera would produce. (It's about 1.6% of the standard resolution of my camera, for example.) If you did indeed personally create this photograph, why is it so small? LX (talk, contribs) 15:08, 17 August 2016 (UTC)

Thank you so much for your reply. I totally understand your policy in this regard, especially as I just newly registered yesterday to add text and a picture to the above website. I did indeed decrease the size of the picture taken with my mobile phone before trying to upload it as I thought since it was an web-site upload, a web-site reduction in size would be appropriate?! However, I did later on try to upload the originally sized picture (3MB) after sending it from my mobile to my computer but again the system refused. Shall I try to directly upload from my mobile phone? — Preceding unsigned comment added by JK Zoo (talk • contribs) 10:29, 18 August 2016 (UTC)

@JK Zoo: You should be able to upload the file directly to Commons, using the Upload Wizard. The filter only affects cross-wiki uploads. Please upload full size images, though, as they are more widely usable... the wiki will automatically create thumbnails of the needed size when used on an article. Uploading photograph[edit]

How to upload photograph in wikipedia Debasishdey17 (talk) 10:55, 17 August 2016 (UTC)

If you actually want to upload the photograph to Wikipedia, you need to go to Wikipedia. If you want to upload it to Wikimedia Commons (this site), from where it can be easily be used by Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, and others, read Commons:First steps and come back here if you have more specific questions. Which public domain copyright tag to use?[edit]

I am interested in uploading a picture of the statue, Fighter of the spirit, that is on the Minneapolis Institute of Art website. The image is listed as public domain and is dated 1928. I have looked over the choices for copyright tag on the upload wizard, and I'm not sure which one to use. Leschnei (talk) 15:44, 18 August 2016 (UTC)

Would {{PD-old-75}} be appropriate? Leschnei (talk) 15:46, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
@Leschnei: This was actually a bit interesting, in that looking shows this isn't the original statue, it's a replica. The statue was made in 1928, for a church in Kiel, Germany. The Nazis then sawed it in half, and someone hid the parts through WWII. The museum obtained this copy in 1959. As a work originally published in Germany, it had a 70-year copyright, and became PD in 2008.
Unfortunately, you can't upload this particular photo, however.... while the statue is in the public domain, the photo itself appears to have been taken by the museum in 2006 (per metadata on another copy) and is itself copyrighted. You need to find a freely licensed photo, or take one. Sorry.
If you do, however, the license for the statue itself will be what you suggested, or {{PD-old-auto |deathyear=1938}}, which is a self-updating version. Reventtalk 19:40, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
I found the story interesting too, which is why I wanted to add it to the museum site. I'll have to contact my network of underground Minneapolis photographers and put them to work! Thanks for your help!! Leschnei (talk) 00:19, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

Wait time?[edit]

When preparing a workshop for possible Wiki Loves Monuments participants, I remembered that "when I was young" (in Wikipedia) I had to wait for 4 days before I could upload images. I don't remember whether it was only Wikipedia or whether it alos applied to Commons. Is there (still) such a wait time for new users? It would be fatal for the workshop because we intended the particippants to create an account and upload images on the same day. I couldn't find any hint in the FAQ or the help pages, that's why I'm asking here. --Bjs (talk) 19:59, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

That still applies on English Wikipedia (not sure about others), but not here. You can see which rights regular logged-in users have at Special:ListGroupRights#user. Here on Commons, it includes upload. LX (talk, contribs) 23:14, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

Imaget gets corrupted when uploaded[edit]

I am trying to upload a large file to Commons, a 16 MB scan of an old map: File:Insula Maioricae Vicentius Mut 1683.jpg. The upload is completed but unfortunately the image gets corrupted, becoming barely visible. Is there any technical issue I should be aware of? Am I doing anything wrong? I would be happy to email the file to anybody willing to help. Thanks. --Hispalois (talk) 20:32, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

The image looks fine to me (both revisions). This could be a caching problem in your browser. Have you tried to check in a different browser? --rimshottalk 20:49, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

Ticket#: 2016080510000991[edit]

Hello still waiting to hear back on two images which were deleted.

First File: "History_of_Thought.png", it has been deleted from Commons by INeverCry because: No permission since 22 July 2016.)

Second File: "Greek_school_by_ziggyfin.png", it has been deleted from Commons by INeverCry because: Copyright violation, see c:Commons:Licensing - c:OTRS permission from Reggie Graham ("ziggyfin") required.)

I would like to get these files put back up. I wrote and storyboarded these comics. I commissioned an artist,Reggie Graham ("ziggyfin"), to create them for me with the understanding that they were to be used in the public domain. When I added the first one, it asked it I owned the work (if it was mine--can't recall the wording but you know it) to which I said, correctly, that the work was mine in both senses--that it was my property because I bought it and it was mine because it was first my intellectual property. Were I erred, it seems, is indicating in the description that it was original artwork by Reggie. I did this to ensure that he got credit for his art, which is brilliant. A notice showed up on the page indicating that OTRS was required so I asked Reggie to do that because whomever flagged it didn't believe me. fair. He did the email method. I then uploaded a second file, greek school, and Reggie did the process again. I sent you a copy of that email. That file was deleted almost immediately.

These two illustrations are important elements of the chapter which is important to the book. I request that they be put back up OR let me know what we need to do to effect this. Thanks Dwt2 (talk) 05:32, 20 August 2016 (UTC)

Looking further, I see it was addressed at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Undeletion_requests/Archive so I need to work harder.Dwt2 (talk) 07:25, 20 August 2016 (UTC)
