Extracted[edit]

It would be much clearer where your cropped images came from if you used the {{extracted from}} (on the cropped image) and {{extracted}} (on the original image) as I did for File:Close up Hillary Clinton laughing October 2014.jpg that you see I renamed because the name did not tell editors who it is. BTW, the source is actually the Flickr url of the original as that is where we have to check the copyright status, so it's best to put that as the source to make life easier for the reviewers. Thanks Ww2censor (talk) 22:13, 16 July 2015 (UTC)

Okay, thanks for the info. I will try to do these things in the future. Cheers.Anythingyouwant (talk) 22:22, 16 July 2015 (UTC)

Two-dimensional art[edit]

Hello,

In the French version of WP, there is no correct license regarding music files. The notion of "Public domain" follows two independent lines :

  1. The composer is dead for a long time (although it's not quite clear, and I never got sufficient explanation, I would say 70 years)
  2. The sound file is relatively old (the example you quote is from 1957) - again, not absolutely clear : opinions on the French WP have fluctuated, so I'm usually looking for the oldest possible versions with a relatively good quality.

If you just want to eliminate all sound files, I am already discouraged with the articles I try to write, create or expand, and illustrate with images and sounds. There is no real debate on the French WP for classical music. I am considering the possibility of letting it all go and not care : it's all work and efforts provided in vain.

Tell me what you decide to do.

Flopinot2012 (talk) 07:35, 19 October 2015 (UTC)

Hi Flopinot. Thanks for responding to my inquiry and visiting my talk page. What if the sound file is new, but the composer has been dead for a century? Do you think it's okay to upload such music?Anythingyouwant (talk) 14:51, 19 October 2015 (UTC)
Hello Anythingyouwant,
I can only tell you what I think and have learned from my experience with various people (some critic, some helpful) : if the sound file is new, I always do my best to replace it with an older recording.
For instance, in the article on Berlioz Treatise of instrumentation & orchestration, a short sound file taken from a recording from the mid-1990s had to be replaced by one from 1950 or 1951 (I don't remember the exact year, but it is mentionned in the article). The quality was almost lost in the process but the musical argument wasn't reduced to silence... so it's okay.
At some point, we thought that we could quote short excerpts from recent recordings too, but that was a glimmer of hope that was soon replaced by more criticism from new people (who knows why ?) - no clear conclusion. The French laws seem to allow us to do it, but users on WP refuse to recognize these legal texts and keep "arguing" (blocking) the situation.
As a consequence, I am now extremely cautious : I only developed and illustrated the article on Debussy's Etudes when one of the worst critics said that it was okay to use full recordings by Walter Gieseking (from the 50s). I DIDN'T create the article on Florent Schmitt's Psalm XLVI, even with a perfect recording from the 50s, simply because the composer died in 1958. I illustrated the article on Reicha's 36 fugues with sound files 100% created on my own, using a software for piano sounds (the one I use to compose too) etc. etc.
So you see it's a rather complex matter. I don't understand why Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto n°2 is fully recorded in its article and we can't quote a moment from Ravel's Concerto in G (Ravel died in 1937, Rachmaninov in 1943...) - all I can say is that an article on classical music is always better with sound : not everyone reads music, and in some cases such as Berlioz, reading the score isn't enough to understand its brilliance or magic.
I could have quoted the full Fête polonaise by Chabrier (died in the 19th century, sound file by Paul Paray is from the 1950s) but I thought the opening fanfare would be enough to raise the reader's / listener's interest.
Best regards, Flopinot2012 (talk) 06:42, 20 October 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the info, Flopinot. I think it's great that you have been adding sound to Wikipedia articles. BUT, the fact that Ravel died in 1937, and Rachmaninov died in 1943, does not matter if the performance was in 1990, for instance. The date of the performance is the important date, according to the U.S. copyright rules (Wikipedia is headquartered in the U.S. so we have to respect U.S. rules). I don't plan on deleting any music that you have uploaded, because I'm not a policeman, but I urge you to consider that even music composed by Bach or Beethoven is forbidden at Wikipedia, if it has been performed within the last several decades, and the performer has not granted us permission. And most certainly an ogg file of music is not a "two-dimensional" work of art (which is what some of your uploaded music files say). Best Regards.Anythingyouwant (talk) 16:23, 20 October 2015 (UTC)

Proper Licensing[edit]

Hello Anythingyouwant,

Pretty much all incriminated files have been suppressed from the articles on wikipedia : I am extremely tired with this kind of blind accusation. Let's move on.

All files can be deleted on here. I will still point out that :

  • A 1972 recording of a work by Hector Berlioz (1803-1869) should be accepted, as per previous discussions (apparently, Martinon is from 1973, so I don't care)
  • A recording of Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) from 1949 should be accepted — but the question of Ravel's copyrights in France is an unending (and endlessly irritating) debate...
  • A recording of Claude Debussy (1862-1918) by himself should be accepted.
  • A recording of Béla Bartok (1881-1945) by himself (recorded in 1940) could be accepted : Bartok's work is now in public domain.
  • The voice recording / interview (1947) of Charles Koechlin (1867-1950) may or may not be accepted : I don't know...
  • The recording of an interview (1955) of Edgar Varèse (1883-1965), although interesting, may not be accepted : I doubt it.

If these files, acceptable as they would be under the proper license (which still leaves much to be desired : everything is determined in visual terms, okay for books and paintings and sculptures and engravings and drawings and such : all in all, perfect for a world that would be deaf and dumb...) are deleted on here, let the robots do so. I don't feel like fighting for any of them, at this point.

Best regards (in French, I usually sign « Cordialement »), Flopinot2012 (talk) 12:45, 11 March 2016 (UTC)

POTY barnstar.svg

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2015 Picture of the Year contest.

Dear Anythingyouwant,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.
