No coding experience needed

Patchwork is a hands-on workshop for learning Git and GitHub. Join us for a night of hacking and snacking, and make some new friends while you're at it!

Forks you don't eat with? Branches not made of wood?

Newcomers to Git and GitHub, you'll be creating your own open source project. You will leave with a merged Pull Request, a square on your contributions graph, and confidence to get more involved in the open source community.

Mentors, if you've ever had a Pull Request merged, now's your chance to share the love and help someone else get started on this journey.

Learning is better together

Myself, @rachelmyers, @bleikamp, @chrissiebrodigan, @paulcbetts and other GitHub staff, and local community mentors will be on hand to answer your questions and help you create your first open source project and achieve your first merged Pull Request.

@jlord will kick the event off with a talk on how she got started in programming and a community member will close things out with a lightning talk on their experience in open source.

Details:

  • For: Git and GitHub beginners.
  • When? Tuesday, Sept 30 from 6:30-9:00pm.

Patchwork July

pw

It's time for another Patchwork night at GitHub HQ, next Thursday, July 10th!

Patchwork nights are hands-on help sessions for people new to Git and GitHub. You'll leave with a merged pull request on an open source project, green squares on your contribution graph, and the excited feeling of learning a lot of new tips and tricks to keep going strong on your own!

If you want to help mentor future open sourcers, this night is for you, too. Along with other GitHubbers (including some in-SF-for-a-limited-time-only 'Hubbers @muan, @mikemcquaid, and @michaeltwofish!), you'll help attendees with questions throughout the evening. Wondering if you have what it takes? If you know Git, GitHub or you've been to one of our Patchwork nights in SF or London then you've got all the skills necessary to be a Patchwork mentor! We'd  to see you again!

To mix things up in a really inspiring way, GitHub's own @alysonla will be joining us to talk about how she got started in open source. There will be food, drinks, and new friends to meet.

Also, no coding experience required! RSVP here.
