This 3A UBEC is a great for efficiently running your Raspberry Pi on batteries. You can also use it to charge a mobile phone from batteries (provided the phone accepts a charger with a micro USB connector).
Universal Battery Elimination Circuits or UBECs are very common in the world of remote control planes and quadcopters. Essentially they are efficient switching voltage regulators that can provide a regulated 5V or 6V supply from battery packs with a higher voltage. We have taken a popular 3A UBEC made by Hobbywing, and added on connectors that make it really easy to use the UBEC to power a Pi from batteries. We've put 2.54mm female connectors on the input lines and a micro USB connctor for powering the Pi on the output lines. As the name suggests, this UBEC can provide 3A of current which is more than enough to run the Pi along with a number of USB peripherals.
To run your Pi off batteries we'd recommend using a 6xAA battery holder and some good rechargeable or alkaline batteries.
