Just a layout of the project, I used an Arduino Uno, with the Adafruit Motorshield, along with Stepper motors from Adafruit and a power supply from the same. I tried to make everything from Adafruit or an easy to find supplier for me.

One issue I am having now is the gondola, which is merely a weighted clip. The weights aren't too good and it has no accuracy. So this is next on my build list.

Also not sure if anyone else has had issues or not but everything within the interface is opposite on the machine: up is down and down is up. If anyone has some guidance on this, it would be greatly appreciated.

If you want to keep up further on the build I am cataloging it and many other Arduino builds on my blog: http://www.diyprojex.com

Truthfully, I always have trouble visualizing which way the wiring should be, but it only takes a few trial and error attempts to get it right.

The two things you can change are which side each motor connects to the shield and the order of the motor wiring to the shield. First try changing the order of the wiring (change to green, yellow, grey, red, descending). After that, up should be up, but if a command to go left or right is the opposite of what it should be, you have your motors connected to the wrong side (I think). Again, I have trouble visualizing this stuff.

My motors are oriented like yours, with the shaft pointing away from the board, which is the opposite of how Sandy has his. I remember having to try a few combinations before getting the motors spinning the right way.

Have fun, hopefully it won't be too frustrating!

Yes like Kong says, either swap the whole motor to the other end of the shield, or swap the two pairs of wires in each motor (the order of the wires in each pair isn't significant). There isn't a wrong way or a right way either, and all motors have different coloured wires, so trial and error is the best way to do it. Debug up and down first, get those movements working (by swapping the pairs to each motor), then try left and right.

Kongorilla / sandy,

Thanks for the help, I will change this and move on to getting the settings created correctly. Because even though it was backwards my "lines" are eliptical.

I forgot to ask also, sandy do you sell just the gondola and bearings?

Sorry I didn't reply - I do have stock of them but I'm not sure of the price, would need to work it out, and I'm pretty busy building the current batch of machines for folks. If you'd still like one, drop me an email to remind me about this I'll make sure it gets added to the list 🙂

cheers!
