Has anyone successfully drawn with a white pen on black paper - I have several images in mind that would best be done in this way, but every time I try, the pen quits drawing after less than a minute. So far I've tried Sharpie oil based paint pens (white), and Sharpie silver permanent markers with no success, as they seem to dry up after a minute or two. I'd like something with a fairly fine point.

Hey Eric, I've had reasonably success with uni-ball "signo" brand pens in silver, white and gold. No problem with drying up, but then I was only doing fairly small pieces - no pics sorry.

I think the issue with most paint-ish type pens is getting the supply to the tip - even if there is a tilt to let gravity do the work, there's usually a valve that needs pumping every now and then to refresh the felt tip.

Der Kritzler (alex tinkerlog) suffered this initially, but I don't know if he hit on a solution. When I was drawing with big fat pens in windows I used to rely on the valve being very imperfect. That is more likely with water-based paints. Spirit-based paints will have tighter seals.

This pic (http://www.flickr.com/photos/sebleedelisle/7773050106/in/set-72157630882223122) is a good example of drawing with light-on-dark. Seb just says "gel pen", but I bet it's something like these signos.

good luck!

Thanks, Sandy - I wasn't able to find Uno-ball gel pens in white locally, but did find some Pentel "Sunburst" ball point gel pens in white (at Staples). Posted my first "white-on-black" drawing on Flickr ("Girl with a Pearl Earring" under "stereoeric").
Came out pretty well, although the ball point pen doesn't seem to draw quite as reliably as the Sharpies.Wasn't sure how long the pen would last, so did a fairly small drawing. Also, it's a little longer , so tends to wobble more. However, I'm definitely encouraged, so will try some more!

Looks great I think! Sure there's a little wobble, but probably nothing that a little tuning of the speed / acceleration won't fix. Adding extra weight to the gondola increased stability too (but sometimes leads to other issues).
