or is it better to use centre top as is the dafault?

Forgot to answer this - the home point location doesn't make any difference, it's arbitrary. The reason it's in the middle at the top is so that it's easy to measure where the middle is! And at the top because when you have no penlift you don't want it resting on your paper.

When I've used really tall machines that I can't reach the top of, I've set the home point at the bottom instead.
