Yep, that's a bit rum isn't it. If you really think nobody would notice, then you've got nothing to lose. The problem is that your content then disappears from view and availability, unless you've got a good set of links to it already out there.
Github / bitbucket is the obvious choice of host for source files. Github even has a native STL viewer these days. I don't really bother with thingiverse any more because it's a pain to actually manage versions and stuff on, rather than for any political feelings, but it's been turning a little disingenuous for a while now.
Github seems to index reasonably well through google too, at least if you put a good README.md in the project.
