Hi Sandy,
Got your vitamin kit and love it; thanks a lot for making it available.
But I couldn't find any information how to assemble these parts?

Image

Can you provide a photo about how that should look like all together?
thanks

Hi! Thanks, glad you're enjoying it so far 🙂 I left the assembly as a fun puzzle. Actually no I just didn't get around to writing a "how". This pic:

probably explains it best. The two parts of the wallplate just glue together (I use UHU contact adhesive). The sprocket just pushed onto the motor shaft - there is a spline and a groove cut in the shaft that make it a more positive match. I put in a couple of spare cactuses because they tend not to survive a drop.

Great picture btw!
cheers, good luck!

Indeed, assembling is fun, but you know Switzerland is the country of the watchmaker, so we love perfection. 😉

I was thinking, there must be spare parts, the same for the gondola.

Thanks for the quick answer. I try to document the build up here:

Oh cool site! I've never seen the kit looking so neat before 🙂 Thank you!

Yep, couple of spares for the gondola too. In practice I've _very_ seldom broken pieces during assembly, but things do fall off unexpectedly from time to time, and one of the downsides of having "special bits" is that they are harder to repair. That said my first gondola was made of corrugated cardboard hot-glued to the bearings, and it drew fine.

If you (or anybody else really) ever need spares for repairing, just drop me a line - at the moment I'm pretty flush with parts, so I can help, and am happy to.

Here is the next puzzle-question: In which order to wire the white/yellow/blue/red wires of the stepper motor to the polarshield?

And: how many ampere needs the power supply'

The first pic on this page
http://www.polargraph.co.uk/setup/polargraphsd-connections/
is probably the best guide for the wire connections because the connection lead has a stripe on it that makes it a bit clearer. It's red-blue-yellow-white anyway, from left to right on the polarshield input. I should probably update the instructable, or make one that describes how to set up a polarshield vs an adafruit motorshield. But I haven't.

Each motor is rated to draw 0.6 amps, so in principle 1.2 amps should cover it. In practice I used a 350mA supply for ages but I wouldn't recommend that. I use a 1amp supply myself normally but usually supply 1.5 or 1.2amp supplies with the kits.

Thanks, so I hope I get that machine running during the next weekend and then I will upload the next series of pictures.

No problem that some information is missing, that's why I collect all the bits and pieces as I build my machine on my website. Maybe it can help other newbies to get an overview of your great project.

And then comes the next question: I could not find a schematic of the Polarshield?

It's good of you to post your process - very nice to see your impressions, and you're right, its a good way of highlighting some of the pitfalls (there are a couple :))

I haven't got a graphics-format schematic, but the source file is here: http://code.google.com/p/polargraph/source/browse/#svn%2Fhardware

Along with the PCB layout files, both in EAGLE format. I can probably render a PNG if you don't have Eagle.

Thanks a lot, I got the hardware running without any troubles:
http://gontarczyk.org/gs/polargraph/polargraph-hardware/

I made a PDF from your schematic as well:
http://gontarczyk.org/gs/data/uploads/workbook/polargraph/polarshield_v1.21.pdf

Now I am fighting with the controller app, that seems to be the harder part of the project ...
