I was watching one of the old hektor videos and noticed the automatic configuration it does.

The can is on the floor, it reels in until it hits the limit with one motor, then shuttles it over to the other then drops it back down. With the new limit pins exposed on the shield, is this something you are going to try to incorporate?

Hi Sleepy, yes definitely on the cards. To be honest, the pins have been exposed for a while, but I've just never got a hardware limit switch sorted out to trigger it. There is a rudimentary "calibrate" routine in the firmware already, but it's never been tested, so pure guesswork really. I can't really think of a better way of doing it either.

Calibration / limit switching would be so much easier with an unbeaded cord (spooling instead of counterweighting that is), so it might be the push required to move over to that system. I'm kind of reluctant to do that. I likes me my beaded cord, so I do.

So I was thinking about this some more while I was playing with my niece, she has this toy that is a set of beads that are design to snap around a piece of cord. So think of it like a spherical 'clam' with a hinge on one side, a little friction snap on the other and a little channel to put the string in right down the center. The ones she had were too small and my sister can't remember where they came from. But if we could find larger ones that we could snap over a section of the beaded cord and then create a limit that's a channel with two switches in serial that triggers the limit.

Something like this:

Thoughts?

Looks good, but where would it be mounted?

This is the kind of thing I've been playing with:
Image, in conjunction with a "big bead" like in your design. I haven't tried it in practice yet. The big bead will rise up on the rims of the sprocket, and press the lever.

I worry that it would leave dangerously few beads still engaged in the sprocket teeth.

ah I see where you are going here, I'll mull it over some more, maybe some lego prototyping is called for.
