Hey,

Just wanted to tip anyone with an ipad (or iphone?) about an app called imaengine. It's basically a vector tracer program, but it has a nice feature of filling shaded areas with hatched lines, which of course is handy for drawing with the polargraph. It let's you export svg's, but still only via itunes unfortunately.

Once again, Marilyn as an example 😯

That is great! I really like the quality of the shading too.

Aw man, that hatching looks great. Unfortunately, I don't have an "i" device. I see imaengine is also available for Android -- not helpful for me, either. 🙁

There are a few options (that I know of) for Inkscape users, but they don't look like real hand drawn hatching per your example. One is to use Inkscape's built in "Hatches" path effect (Path/Path Effect Editor.../Apply new effect/Hatches (rough)). Applying a "Sketch" path effect after that improves things a bit.

Another option is to use Evil Mad Scientist's "Hatch fill" extension, but it's very limited:

BTW, EMS has a useful wiki page devoted to filling vector drawings (intended for their eggbot customers):

I found another hatching app called "SketchMee". It's for idevices, but also standard mac's. This one does full- and cross hatching. You can also choose how many shades of hatching it should include, along with overlap and other stuff. I really like the results, though it feels a bit wrong having to process the pics through another device.

Makes me wonder how hard it would be to implement it into the controller somehow, maybe something like this: convert image to grayscale--> trace to vectors--> hatching intensity based on GS value.
But then again, I have very limited programming experience, it's probably much more intricate than so! 😯

Evilmadscientists hatching looks very nice for when you want precise filling of colour. I shall try it out.

They are really good looking results Andy - I like the unevenness of the lines.

I've been thinking about this too, and it could be reasonably simple to do this in a reasonably simple way, but I do think that it would be pretty hard to do it well.

Deciding how many lines to squiggle is the easy bit (that's what the pixel styles already do, essentially), but vectors have overlaps and islands to contend with, and that's not very straightforward. I always said I would keep the controller quite focussed - as long as there are other tools that do that stuff better than I can, you should use them. My implementation will always be inferior, and what you would gain in speed of workflow you will lose in frustration.

That said, I am planning on respinning the disastrous webcam episode into a built-in vectorisation path for bitmaps, but it will be rudimentary, and at this stage, outlines only.

cheers for the pics - you could consider putting some in the flickr "drawbots" group?
ps... this sounds stupid, but how _do_ you upload images to this forum?! I can't figure it out!

I found the webcam feature quite nifty actually. I'll be hanging on to the controller build with it then, as I'm sure it will come handy one day!
But yeah, makes sense to modify it into a vector tracing feature. It doesn't need to be perfect, I actually prefer it more artsy and randomized otherwise one might just as well print it on a stock standard printer. The simplicity and the other controls you included in the webcam tracer were really great for making more abstract drawings.

I uploaded some polargraph tagged pics to flickr a little while ago, but they somehow got lost in the ocean. Didn't add them to any group though, I'll go do that.
As for adding pics to the forum. There's five upload pic buttons below the text entry box, but only when making a new topic and using standard reply. They don't show up when using quick reply! Might be a java thing if you're on mac/chrome??

Andy, can I ask how you were able to export an svg from the sketch mee app? I'm only getting the options for PDF and JPEG from the app.

I'm assuming that those type of drawings take pretty long with all the pen lifts. Did it require much post-processing in Inkscape before you could use it with the polargraph?

Reall cool App ! Thanks a lot for sharing.

I tried it with 4 colors CMYK, and happy with the result.
I also used the optimizer, which saved me hours of drawing --> https://github.com/ezheidtmann/polargraph-optimizer

I feel stupid here, I wanted to upload images in here but I can figure out how. I know I've done it in the past... Can someone explain me how to please?

EDIT : ok found it... here are the photos
