I mucked around with the polargraph software for a while but found that Moon's code worked very well for SVG's, which I've tried pushing as far as I can.
Each image uses around 2000 individual lines, all designed in Illustrator and fed to the machine as a vector image. Largest image I've done so far was about 2mx3m and took about 4 weeks of continuous drawing.

The output was very nice, but they took forever to draw and my pens kept running out of ink. I'm guessing you had to do some pen changes for the larger pieces?

Did you use scriptographer when designing these in illustrator?

Yes I've churned through a fair few pens. Drawings like the one above use about two whole ball point birds. I found gel pens had rich colour but ran out to quickly. Also found ball point produced some really nice shading and fading which the felt pens lose out on. good for very dense drawings.

I've played around with scripographer but now leaning more towards generating images in processing. still a novice programmer but it's exciting.

the image above and the others on my site were built using the default toolset in illustrator. primarily the blend tool, envelope warp, and various brushes to distort the pattern.

I am simultaneously crestfallen and inspired to see what you have done just using illustrator.

Ballpoint pens are great, I love the texture of them (maybe especially for this kind of work). Is the slowness of the machine an artefact of how the firmware works, a requirement of the medium (to get good lines), or just a problem that has never needed a solution? I know Harvey's was slow, but I guessed it was because there was a significant generative element to the process, so it couldn't ever be planned out ahead of time and optimised.

This is really great to see, thanks for sharing it!

I love this thing - I spent while designing something very similar a long time ago, pre polargraph. Mine was much more complicated and probably wouldn't have worked half as well. I hate it / am inspired by / am terrified when / am excited when that happens.
