Post How to lay out SVG files

Hi again,

I was wondering if you could give a quick run down on how you create SVG files within Inkscape. I'm having problems figuring out how to even use Inkscape it seems. I know you said that you have a layout that matches your paper size.

What I want to know, is how do you create files that fit on your paper well, with Inkscape.

Here's what I'm doing
1. File New -> Default
2. Once new image opens up, I then click on File-> Document Properties
3. Down in custom size area, I select mm for Units, and then I set my paper size. Width = 812 mm, Height = 685 mm
4. I'll then copy in some art from another SVG file, scale it to fit the new paper, etc

When I open the saved SVG file in Polar Graph Controller, it doesn't line up with my paper
Do I need to create a workspace in Inkscape that's bigger than my paper? Like maybe it needs to match my machine size?

Should I set up my image size in Inkscape based on mm to match my paper size, or should I use pixels and convert over or something?

I can't figure out why the heck my image doesn't show up on my paper in PolarGraph Controller!

I think I had to set the units so document "px" was the same as machine "mm". I didn't think px made much sense for a vector drawing but who knows. I don't have it here to test. But yes, my template is 790px wide by 980px tall, and that matched my 790mm wide and 980mm tall machine.

All of this is a moot point because the SVG can be scaled in the controller now, by dragging the "resize vector" number spinner.

The controller only shows vector lines that fall entirely inside the page perimeter, but if you click to "move vector" the whole thing will be revealed. Zoom out to see more. You might find that the "handle" for the SVG is quite far from any actual lines. So I normally have to go between move and resize to get it placed right.

Remember that only simple lines show up, fills or text or any styling will always be missing.

ok, I will download the latest version of Polar Graph Controller and try this all out. I think I'm still using 1.1.2 and that doesn't have the move vector option.
I'll also try laying my art out on a image the size of my machine, rather than the size of my paper.

I know you addressed this all before and I read it somewhere but I couldn't find what you said and it's driving me bonkers. Thank you!

Awesome, just downloading the newer version of Polar Graph Controller did the trick. By having the move vector feature, I can just slide my art onto my page!

Thanks again.

Now if I could only figure out why the heck Inkscape won't let me save. If I click Save, Save As, Save a Copy, nothing happens.
I ended up having to download Inkscape Portable, and that works for me. So odd, and so annoying!!

PS - Can you put a quick link on your website home page to the downloads area? I know you always post it in your blog posts, but it would be easier to find if there was a direct link.

Thanks again 🙂

Hi, dont know if i got your question right, but for me it works like this in inkscape:

1. make your artwork
2. convert object to path (first in the objects tab)
3. save as: .svg is the default - done

Originally I was having problems getting my artwork to line up with my paper in PolarGraph Controller. (See my screenshot above)

After upgrading to newest version of Polargraph Controller, I don't have to worry about it. I can just use the move vector option and move it onto my paper.
