I'm just finished build and set-up my own version of Polargraph, entirely homemade.

I'm Italian, but i'm not really an Arduino fan, so i decided to translate the firmware for the Texas Instruments MSP430 microcontrollers (Launchpad with MSP430G2553).
One microcontroller drives the lcd display, read commands from microSD and send the commands to the other microcontroller that drives the motors. Motor drivers are the Pololu A4988 Stepper Motor Driver Carrier and the motors are taken from old Epson printer.

Your approach to the firmware seems very sensible indeed - I did wonder if I should have made the polarshield something more complex, with it's own built-in microprocessor, (rather than something fairly simple, but that requires a more powerful processor to plug into) but eventually decided that was a little beyond my skills.

Great sprockets too - MDF, milled?

The sprockets are made from MDF, hand cutted and drilled. They are not so accurate, but the results are acceptable.
I decided to make immediately my version of standalone Polargraph because the Polargraph Controller software runs permanently on 100% of CPU.
