I seem to have developed gondola / pen dwell which is creating a series of dots rather than clean lines. I guess this is a weight problem but changing this on the counterweights or gondola does not seem to have any effect. I have tried increased the motor power but without any noticeable improvement. Any advice?

Hallo, that is normal for the machine when driver interactively (that is, over USB). It pauses after every pixel to ask for the next one. If you use a bleedy pen, then it's worse, some pens don't soak so it's not even noticable.

I have a question about this. Is it possible to load the commands onto the arduino and have it run seperately from the computer without the polar shield? I already have mine running via the instructable, with the motorshield...

Hallo, no if you want to run it standalone (ie not connected to a controller feeding it commands) then you need some on-board storage other than the arduino itself. The polarshield will do that for you because the LCD has a SD card slot on the back, but if you've got an arduino mega then you can quite easily wire in an SD card reader a la

And use the polargraph_server_mega firmware. This gives you all the features of the polarshield minus the display. Essentially it means you still need to connect with USB to start it off, but then you can pull the cord and let it run. And you can't stop it once it's started.
