Post Polargraph controller will not start on Win 7

I have had a scrap box version of Marginally Clever's Makelangelo plotter running for several weeks now and would like to try the Polargraph server and controller on my hardware.

Unfortunately, executing the binary for the controller on my Win 7 64bit machine results in only starting javaw.exe, no Polargraph controller window appears or process shows up in the task list. As noted, the Makelangelo executable runs "out of the box".

I assume that I have not set a PATH or some other variable/setting correctly or I have a hosed java 7.51 install. Suggestions please.

Try using the 32bit version. I'm assuming you tried the 64bit version, because I get the same result as you when I run that version (but the 32bit runs fine).

No combination of 32 or 64 bit controller as user or administrator starts. I do have both 32 bit and 64 bit java on my machine.

Aye Kong's experience is the same as mine - I have 32 bit java, so only the 32bit precompiled controller works. Makelangelo is a java app though, so you must have at least one JRE installed properly and with the paths in the proper places. I guess which JRE it is doesn't matter too much (though java -version will tell you I think). So does javaw.exe open up a window, and just stay open, doing nothing?

One of the first things the app does when it starts is creates a default.properties.txt file, so for me, even if the gui doesn't open (when I try to run the 64 bit one), that file gets created before the program bombs out.

Something to note is that the makelangelo program doesn't run at all on this same machine, because I don't have java on the path - so I guess it isn't a java path-ing issue.

I admit I'm pretty unclear about how the executable version of the controller app actually becomes executable - it's a direct export from the Processing IDE, and I haven't ever delved in deeply to figure it out. Because it is a Processing app, you might find that throwing 'processing' and 'export application' into your search terms will help. Compiling and running from source (and all the library capers that involves) is always an option. Use Processing v1.5 and the versions of the libraries in the zip, if you're going down that path.

Would be great to hear if you have any success here, sorry I don't have a solution for you!

OK on it not likely being a path-ing issue. The only apparent result of starting the controller is some brief disk activity, an instance of javaw.exe showing up in the task list, no window, nothing on the task bar, etc.

I did upgrade to JRE 7.51 in both 32 and 64 bit versions when is was released. I'm going to uninstall both JREs, flush any directories/files left behind, reboot, and then do a clean install of only the 32 bit JRE. Will let you know what happens.

If it doesn't work, hit it with a hammer...

After much wafting of incense, arcane incantations, a complete removal of the java sdk from my machine, and a (almost) complete re-install of the sdk, the Polargraph controller starts and responds. I'm not sure where the conflict was but I'm a happier camper.

I did not include the 64 bit jre on re-install, just the sdk with and the 32 bit jre. I had to edit some batch files that start other java projects as they now need to point to 32 bit java libraries.

Now, let's see if I can load the server on my uno.

What a caper. One thing I did notice when I was running it was that it took a while to actually spring into life. But I only mean 10 seconds. I _believe_ the firmware fits onto the UNOs that have a recent bootloader, but it is seriously bursting at the seams. I have a ongoing task to produce a "vector only" version of the firmware that has a bit more room to spare, but no sign of it so far. You need to make sure you are using the libraries in the zip rather than the most recent ones off the various websites too. Good luck!

Hi all,

I'm having a similar issue, but I can get into the controller software. It only works if I run the 32bit one as a administrator, and it takes around 3 minutes to appear. Once it is loaded, and I go to click on the serial port config button, a little window pops up with nothing in it. Wait 3 minutes and a list of ports appear, click on a port, another 3 minutes of waiting.

The program doesn't stop responding, and CPU use is at idle levels. No disk activity during the waiting either.

I wasnt sure if I should start a new thread or not, but if I should of, I'll move it. Sorry!

Also, Sandy, thanks for the extras.

EDIT: I tried the controller software on another computer, and it works perfectly. Same OS and all, but it works fine. The Arduino IDE doesn't work on the computer that the controller software didn't work on too. Weird!
