PLA is a biodegradable plastic, made from cornstarch. It's suitable for most prototype parts and reasonably friendly for the environment.  It's melting point is low enough to keep energy consumption low and high enough for use in most machines. The price is still a bit high but biodegradable plastics are ever more popular so price should be much lower. (Is the price kept high by the industry? So demand lower prices, our opinion is that it the price should drop at least 60%)

PLA sticks queit well to masking tape some say for PLA it works better then Kapton tape

When exposed to Xylene PLA becomes flexible. Xylene is nasty stuff, a pregnant wowan becomes a bio hazard when exposed to xylene and might even explode.

...Make sure you read the safety instructions.
