When makerbot went closed source with their toy they stepped on the souls of their own community. Fact is, that there now are many Chinese clones that seem to be just as good, for a much lower price. So closing the source didn't solve that, contrary, it just motivated copycats to copy this machine since it now seems to be a goose that lays golden eggs. Thus more clones might turn up...

Downside is, that everyone who bought an original Replicator2 doesn't have full access to the source in case the thing has a defect.

Makes one wonder why they gone walking the closed source path, time will tell if this was a smart move or not.
